Welcome to Château de Messey, 8 kms from Tournus, in the commune of Ozenay. Château de Messey is located on a large estate, traces of which can be found in manuscripts dating back to the 9th century. From the 11th century onwards, with the construction of Romanesque abbeys and churches such as Tournus, Chapaize and Cluny, the region experienced a boom. The monks of Citeaux and Cluny, whose intellectual influence over several centuries is indisputable, cultivated vines and developed the art of wine-making in France.

The soul of the old stones of Château de Messey, restored in the traditional way, but with all modern comforts. They will delight all those who seek calm, harmony, natural products, great Burgundy wines… and biodiversity.

Château wines

The history of the Château de Messey estate began with Marc Dumont’s acquisition of a 6-hectare wood in the village of Cruzille. This terroir, claimed and exploited by the monks of Cluny in the 12th century, is classified in the Mâcon-Cruzille appellation. The planting of this pretty vineyard began in 1989.

Three years later, the first harvest is shaping up… It will be vinified at Château de Messey, in Ozenay. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, this Romanesque fortress with its two opposing wings hosted numerous harvests throughout its history, until 1958. Thirty-five years later, the beautiful vaulted cellars are once again home to fermenting wines! The same year, a parcel of Mâcon-Chardonnay was planted opposite the Château on the Crêts terroir.

Today, the estate has grown considerably. We operate two clos without neighbors in two appellations.

Our Clos des Avoueries is a monopoly that today includes 4.6 ha of vines in the Mâcon-Cruzille appellation. The estate’s historic parcel is enclosed by boxwoods, small oaks and murgers. It’s located at altitude (400 m), which keeps the wines very fresh, and faces east towards Mont Blanc. Its terroir, very particular to the Mâconnais region, consists of a thin layer of red clay laid on a very compact limestone slab. The Mineral Spirit!

And the beautiful Les Crêts parcel, in the Mâcon-Chardonnay appellation, just opposite the château, boasts 5.20 ha of Chardonnay, including 4 ha of young vines that are slowly coming into production. Its terroir is composed of white limestone and clay.
